Strange Times, These

This is life as many of us have never known it.
The world is changing, daily, in so many ways.
It’s a bit mind boggling.

These two weeks of Easter celebrations in Mexico are a deeply important religious observance, as well as a busy vacation time. If this were a world without COVID-19, visitors from all over would be descending on Banderas Bay, including many Mexican families; from the very young to the very elderly, from various inland towns, cities and states, to enjoy a hard earned vacation at the beach. So many so, the population around Bahias de Banderas would increase by several thousands.

Now, we have police enforced road blocks at the entrance to towns, requiring ID and proof of residency.

Now, we have the beach roped off to all activities.

Now, the streets are deserted – oh, so many available parking spots and nowhere to shop!
Communities are literally “closed.”

Don’t get me wrong, no complaints here. I know these are just some of the many crucial steps we all need to take, as mankind, to stave off further damage from this nasty virus…’twas simply noticing the vast difference between a thriving tourist town and a virtual ghost town.

So, do you find yourself with extra time on your hands? Maybe preparing extravagant meals? We usually throw together a pretty good dinner, but lately we’ve really been pumping them out, with points for visual style and palate pleasure. Below – our side salad: Michelin Star material, right there.

Are you going to emerge from this an excellent cook? Or an alcoholic? Both, perhaps. Except, here in our state of Nayarit, alcohol sales have been suspended until April 30. I’m not sure of the logic behind that. I suppose it’s to discourage vacationers. North of the border(s) it’s liquor business as usual. There, the powers that be were concerned that banning alcohol sales may do more harm than good.
Alas, if I am to become an alcoholic it will have to wait until at least May 1.

I know there are many in need during these trying times. Kudos to all those kind souls who are delivering food baskets, checking on neighbours and the elderly, and staying safely connected. This weekend we’re taking a break from hovering over a hot stove or BBQ to indulge in Sandrina’s famous turkey dinner. Take-out, of course. Cheers!
