Charity & Volunteering

Bucerias Migrant School

We’ve been volunteering at the Migrant School for several months.  We both go regularly on Friday mornings and spend time in the classrooms, which happen to be dilapidated trailers, while practicing english with the students.  There are five of us who do this on different days, including one altruistic lady who’s been dedicated for over three years. In addition to us teaching English, we are all part of a larger group who focus on improvements for the school property and it’s users.

Of course, the kids are so fun, genuinely respectful and quite affectionate.  Their big brown eyes and even bigger smiles nearly bring me to my knees. It’s always a pleasure to run into them outside of the school environment, too, as we recognize each other in a crowd and share a hug.

There are three teachers for over 140 kids, spread among three trailers.  The Migrant School receives very little funding and relies on philanthropists to cover their electricity bills, and purchases such as educational tools for the teachers, fans for cooling the crowded trailers, cleaning supplies, and repairs.

We’ve found it to be a really wonderful opportunity to become friends with the other volunteers as we work together to have the kids involved in special events like the Dia de los Muertos parade, and most recently, their school Christmas party.  One of our volunteers took individual photos of each child and had them printed. One day we had “Art” class where the students decorated their picture frames (paper plates), that they will give to their family as a Christmas gift.

At the posada there were games, music and dancing, food and beverages, piñatas, and a very special presentation given by the students.  Each child also received a new school backpack containing school supplies, again, through generous donations.

The annual fundraiser, benefiting the Migrant School and Nana’s House (in Tepic), will take place on February 18, 2020, at the Rhythm & Blues Lounge in Bucerias.  With tons of fun planned for all participants, and “Chili For a Cause”, you won’t want to miss it.
