Day-to-Day

Lázaro Cárdenas North

Walking North Toward the Kissing Bridge

There’s an interesting sector of our Bucerias community at the north end of Lázaro Cárdenas, just before crossing the Kissing Bridge into Centro.  It’s almost like a warmer-upper before stepping into the throng of the Centro Market. Part of the charm of this little end-of-the-road tract is it’s friendly people, who offer such a wide variety of goods and services.

The dead-end (to vehicular traffic) starts with the Oxxo convenience store, and across from it, D’Chio: Salon & Spa. Next door to that you’ll find colourful rugs and tapestries at Julia’s Authentic Handmade Oaxacan Rugs, a “Human Connections” partner. Further on, vendor’s stalls display belts, leather goods, ceramics, Talavera dishes, clothing, games, and home decorating pieces. You can even book a tour to explore more of Banderas Bay at Scott’s Tours. Hungry? Satisfy your cravings at Sukha Beach House, or the new Burrito Mio, where you have use of their pool.

Instead of walking past these folks, stop in and say hello. Every person has a story.

We asked a couple of the shopkeepers to share theirs…

VICKY AGUILAR at SCOTT’S TOURS

Vicky comes from Tomatlán, Jalisco, about three hours south of Bucerias. She’s a friendly lady who wears her brilliant smile on a daily basis, and she’s ready to answer your questions or recommend a particular tour after hearing your wants and needs.

Entrance to Scott’s Tours

Vicky and Scott began operating “Scott’s Tours” in 2003, and have remained in the same location since. Sadly, Vicky lost Scott, her husband of twenty-five years, during the summer of 2019, but she continues to work hard to cover all of the responsibilities that come with raising a family and owning a business. She lives in nearby San Vicente with her three daughters. Together, they love going to the beach or cooking up a storm in the kitchen!

So Many Options

What we like about Scott’s Tours is a) low prices, and b) the ease of walking in, finding your favourite tour, and booking. Zero timeshare pressure. Simple.

Vicky tells us all regular tours are currently available for purchase, with the tour operators booking only 50% of customers to ensure appropriate spacing, and masks are mandatory.  COVID protocols are in place “with very high standards” for the health and safety of visitors and tour employees. Meet Vicky and learn all about which tours meet your interests. She’s open Monday to Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm. A comment on Trip Advisor describing Scott’s Tours level of customer service says it all, “You won’t be disappointed.”

BETO and REINA at BETO’S PLACE

Beto and Reina

Beto and his wife, Reina, say a quiet “hello” as people wander by.  They are constantly beautifying their space, polishing the jewelry, straightening a shirt on the hanger, ready to welcome you to see their wares. Beto is originally from Acapulco, and came to Bucerias about eleven years ago. He and Reina initially had a shop in the Centro Market but moved to their current location seven years ago. They prefer their spot here, working amidst less competition in a more informal atmosphere.

Pancho, a Sales Associate at Beto’s Place

Beto and Reina live in Bucerias with their children – a perfect balance; one boy and one girl. With spare time, Beto heads out to play soccer and Reina attends Zumba classes. As a family, they go for long walks and spend time bicycling around Bucerias, exploring together.

During the pandemic closures, Beto spent his time learning a new craft. “I was painting these hats on the months when we didn’t open here,” he explained. “I learned to paint those – I saw some videos and I tried to practice, and I also have a friend who paints those hats and he taught me some extra things about painting.” Beto also has a knack for matching puppies with families. Be sure to let him know if you’re looking for a furry enhancement to your life.

Beautiful Work. If You Have an Idea, Beto Will Paint it On Your Hat!
