Paleteria La Michoacana
My Friend Marge Sotomayor and I have enjoyed a few lunches together over the winter. (I use capitals, because that is actually how I refer to her). I love that My Friend Marge speaks Spanish, having been an educator for many years, teaching Spanish in California and English in Mexico City. I also love that she shares her knowledge of the language with ease, and possesses the type of heart that looks for ways to support humankind.
Here’s a story from My Friend Marge. She introduced me to the “fish tacos” place, and now we can’t stay away from tacos or paletes!
There are so many reasons I love spending time in Mexico. I have the opportunity to speak my second language on a daily basis. Plus the people, the culture, the music, the climate — and the FOOD!!
One of my favorite places to eat in Bucerias is Rincon de Ensenada on Calle Juarez between Lazaro Cardenas and Francisco Madero. Their tacos of fish/shrimp/marlin are unequaled anywhere —- in quality and price! I’ve gone there many times but only recently discovered the Paleteria (ice cream shop) next door.
Paleteria La Michoacana is a gem. Berenice is the owner and master ice cream maker and she is assisted most days by her mother-in-law, Gloria. All ice cream, fresh fruit waters, fruit bars and ice cream bars are made on site! On a recent visit I sat there happily licking my “rompope” bar watching a constant stream of mostly English-speakers arriving for their evening treat. I listened as Gloria struggled to explain the multitude of flavors. Always looking for a chance to use my language skills in a helpful manner, I approached Gloria before I left and asked her if she would like me to translate all the flavors.
She happily agreed!
On a subsequent visit, Gloria and I went through all the flavors on offer (and some that were not). At home I translated the flavors and arranged to have “menus” printed.
Enjoy such flavors as caramel, peanut butter with chocolate, strawberry cream, oreo cookie, irish cream, jackfruit, and more!
Paleteria La Michoacana is a real find in the middle of the Golden Zone. And now any client will be able to understand the variety of flavors of ice cream and frozen bars. It is open seven days a week from noon to 9:00 p.m. Stop in to say Hola to Gloria and Betty and enjoy one of their homemade treats.
