Cafe Las Flores
This chic and classy cafe opened on November 1 of this year, and simultaneously enhanced eatery options along Lazaro Cardenas. Choose either outdoor dining or air-conditioned indoor dining…the ambience is delightful.
Highly recommended, with prompt and attentive service and quality fare.
We finally visited for lunch. As we waited for our iced tea, a couple beside us was served their meal. I didn’t want to rudely turn around, but judging from their comments I could tell they were impressed…”It looks great!” “Oh, it’s delicious.” Then silence. When their hunger was satisfied, I overheard them tell Jorge, “This will become one of our favourites, and, compliments to the chef!”
Our lunch arrived, and similar sentiments were said by us. Here’s what we ordered:
Dennis decided on the Mixed Salad, consisting of fresh, crisp lettuce, red onion, cucumber, tomato and avocado, dressed with a delicious citrus vinaigrette, and served with bread crisps and seasoned butter. When we asked what the dressing was, Jorge told us, “Many people say ‘you should sell the dressing in a bottle, you would be a millionaire!'” Not a bad idea…I would buy some.
I chose the Argentine Chorizo, Cheese and Chimichurri Sauce Sandwich. Yes, it is as grand as it’s name. I personally thank Jules Sanderson for insisting that I try it. Jules, you are correct, it is “damn good.” And, if you happen to consider yourself a french fry connoisseur, this may very well become your go-to spot. Two words…Crispy Hot!
We also ate up a dish of handmade coconut sorbet…so quickly that I neglected to take a photo!
Jorge Garcia spent more than thirty years in the restaurant business, starting as a busboy and dishwasher and finally holding managerial positions in various high-end restaurants. He took the step to become an owner, and after opening Cafe Las Flores, together with his son Angel, Jorge says, “It’s different to be the employer, but I’m learning.” He strives to find the freshest ingredients. “Every day I am looking for the best ingredients I can find. Every day I go to La Cruz for fresh tuna, mahi-mahi and shrimp, and I find the freshest produce by seeing it (in person). I think my filet mignon is the freshest in the bay…it’s still moo-ing!”
The walls are adorned with beauty in the form of paintings by Floydilou Kerr and Michael Carlyle. Good news – they’re for sale!
Jorge is proud of his team, and in describing Las Flores’ Chef Abril, Jorge said, “I feel like I found a treasure.”
